Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Despite being Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh has a lot to offer to those who love the great outdoors. Arthurs Seat, located at Holyrood Park, is an extinct volcano and is a very popular destination for hillwalking. It offers panoramic views of the city, and is relatively easy to climb, and so is frequented by seasoned hillwalkers and novices alike.

There are also several greenspaces scattered throughout the city, including Princess Street Gardens, and The Meadows.

Immerse Yourself in the History

Edinburgh is steeped in history and there are many historical landmarks and world heritage sites to visit and walking tours to make use of. Edinburgh also has a rich literary history, authors from Robert Louis Stevenson to Ian Rankin all have huge connections to the capital city. If literature is of interest to you, make sure you visit The Writers’ Museum just off the Royal Mile, and check out one of the numerous Literary Tours.

Live Like a Local

If you want to immerse yourself in the local culture then make sure you make the most of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival if you visit Edinburgh in August. Take in one of the street performances, or book to see one of the thousands of free and paid shows at numerous venues across the city. Get a great spot at Arthurs Seat, and watch the firework display to mark the end of the festival.

If you visit in November and December, you can experience Edinburgh’s Christmas. From the Christmas Market in East Princes Street Gardens, to the Fairground rides in Santa Land you will find it easy to get into the festive spirit!

Eat, Drink and Be Merry

Eating out is always an option in Edinburgh. From hidden gems frequented by students, to well known restaurant chains to Michelin star restaurants, there is lots to choose from whatever your budget. 

The Southside is student central and is where the main campus of Edinburgh University resides. Economical options are abound in this part of the city. Redbox noodle bar is a great option, hailed the ‘Subway of the noodle world’, you choose everything from the type of noodles, vegetables, meat and sauce you want to accompany your noodles. 

If you are interested in bagging yourself some of the wonderful local food, you will be able to find them at one of the several farmers markets, held regularly throughout the city.
